YUKIMI ANNAND is a calligrapher, lettering and book artist based in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, California. She was born in a small town in Boso peninsula, Japan. Her parents were flower farmers and she grew up with an appreciation of the beauty of nature and a respect for its power. After high school, she studied visual communication design in Tokyo. In the 1980s she worked as a graphic designer on mainly visual identity design programs for large and small corporations. She left her position as a director in the prestigious Takenobu Igarashi Studio to come to the U.S.

She discovered the world of Western calligraphy in 2000, and has been fascinated by that world ever since. She is passionate about the beauty of the Roman alphabet and creates unique artwork with her love of calligraphic mark making and textures incorporated with nature. She has been experimenting with the use of tools and mediums to expand her world of calligraphy. It has also been her great pleasure to share her ideas and to give workshops all around the world since 2012.

Yukimi’s work has frequently been shown in Letter Arts Review magazine as well as calligraphy books and any art related magazines and journals. And they have been included in calligraphy collections in Berlin, San Francisco, Moscow and private collections.

Yukimi Annand

Ever since I decided to make a living from calligraphy, I have aimed to be a good calligrapher and create quality items.
It has been fun to create anything with words and texts. Ideas spring up, and I create art in different forms and mediums.

Why do I keep creating like this?
I think it is because learning and working with letters makes me very happy, and I have been building connections with nature, people, and myself.

I would like to continue to create by exploring the possibilities of calligraphy.
